A day in the life of a creative

Mark LyneHi, my name's Mark Lyne. The day of a Graphic Designer doesn’t begin when you walk through the office door. You're always thinking about elements of design, projects, briefing and how you can apply things that inspire you to your work.

My working day begins by firstly checking through my emails, before going into a meeting with the account handlers and our creative director to discuss the week’s work over a coffee.

During the meeting we have a brain storming session about a new creative brief. One of the qualities of Marketing Team Direct is the involved way the discussion process develops ideas from all members of staff. It’s great to get a varied perspective as people draw on their personal experience and you really get the feeling that something exciting is occurring. Inspired by our meeting I spend the rest of the morning drawing out some interesting ideas to put forward to our creative director.

After lunch I’m handed an urgent brief that needs turning around before the end of the day! This type of scenario adds to the excitement of the job because your day can really head off at a tangent anytime.

We have developed a strong brand identity for this client, which makes pulling together these quick jobs straightforward. So after some creative Photoshop work on my main image to allow my headline to sit comfortably within the ad, it gets approved and I hand the job over to our Artworker who will run through our pre-press “check list” and send the job off to print.

I now get a chance to meet again with the account handlers and the creative director to discuss the ideas for the project we were working on earlier in the day. There are some great suggestions on how we could push the direction the job is heading, and we decide to develop 3 creative approaches to put forward to the client.

The day is drawing to a close, so I begin to visualise the 3 ideas and can’t wait to see how the end product will look. I’ve been in agency work for 5 years but with Marketing Team Direct I’ve really flourished as a designer. We are encouraged to express our creativity in all aspects of work, and when you find yourself in such an environment you cannot help but feel inspired to push yourself and your design capabilities.
